Picton is the beautiful
gateway to the South Island. Lying at the end of the majestic Queen
Charlotte Sound the town of approximately 3000 people is dominated by the
calm waters of the sound and the ferry services that link New Zealand’s two
main islands. Queen Charlotte Sound’s first famous visitor was Captain
Cook who stayed in the area long enough to plant New Zealand’s first English
vegetable garden in 1770. He came back several times to pick vegetables over
the years and grew quite fond of the area. Today’s visitors quickly discover
the charm that enchanted the famous explorer.
Picton is far more than the departing point for Wellington, it is a
destination in its own right just waiting to be explored. As the largest
town in the Marlborough Sounds, Picton makes a great base to explore this
watery playground. For the energetic there are sea kayaking excursions,
coastal tracks to hike and plenty of water sports to enjoy, while for the
more laid back you can experience the sights from a cruise ship, visit the
museum, galleries and enjoy the vistas from a nearby lookout.
