Milford Sound is New Zealand’s most famous fiord running 15km inland from the
south Tasman Sea in New Zealand’s world heritage listed Fiordland National Park.
Rising 1200 metres in a perfect triangular shape are the amazing sheer rock
faces of Mitre Peak, the most photographed peak in the country.
Most
of the thousands of daily visitors to Milford Sound stay in either nearby Te
Anau two hours drive south of Milford Sound, or Queenstown some six hours drive
away with a small number staying in the sound for the night. Eateries and
facilities are limited as the location caters essentially to day trippers.
Other than picture perfect views of Mitre Peak, the bush clad mountains and
calm waters of the fiord you can enjoy boat cruises, kayaking, canoeing, scenic
flights and for the energetic bush walking.
With annual rainfall of 7.5 metres and changeable weather conditions the
sheer mountain sides plunging deep into the sound quickly transform in amazing
temporary waterfalls after each downpour. You’ll get wonderful views of these as
you cruise the sound, often with playful dolphins playing in your shadow.
