Methven / Mt Hutt - Cities, Towns and Localities
Nestled in the foothills of the South Island’s high country is the charming town of Methven. The sleepy country town with 1200 inhabitants comes alive in winter when hordes of skiers and snowboarders invade, to enjoy the thrills at one of the areas five ski fields. Mt Hutt is the South Island’s busiest ski resort as it lies less than 2 hours drive from Christchurch making it a convenient round trip. Snow lovers really are spoilt for choice with slopes to challenge any level of skill within a short drive of Methven. At night, the township buzzes with excited skiers looking to recharge themselves in time for another day on the slopes.

Until the 1970’s the small town of Methven thrived almost exclusively as a farming service town but the possibilities of tourism were discovered and now the area abounds with year round adventures. The stars of the Methven show include their famous Aoraki Balloon Safari. The amazing views of the majestic Southern Alps and the pancake flat Canterbury Plains are a true highlight of any New Zealand holiday and the brave rave about their balloon flight for years to come. Ballooning is very safe and ideal for all ages.

Rangitata Rafts have a pick up service from Christchurch and their three hours of white water rafting will exhaust and excite you. While the adrenaline is pumping you can also experience New Zealand’s highest altitude bungy jumping at  Mt Hutt Bungy. Horseback riding, heliskiing and rock climbing are also on the menu for the energetic. More sedate activities to enjoy include watching the balloons from the ground, Methven’s museum and any of several high country and cross country walks.

Heli Skiing New Zealand

Methven’s pure high country air, amazing year round vistas, laid back peace and quiet delight some, while the heart stopping thrills and challenges ignite others. Methven and the Mt Hutt area are a compulsory winter destination and those who visit at other times of year find a beautiful town full of fun practically on Christchurch’s doorstep. The town is well provided with accommodation options to match all budgets, often at much cheaper rates than in Christchurch.
