Whangarei in New Zealand’s
sub-tropical Northland region makes a great year round destination for those
looking to escape the rat race. The city of 49,000 is located on a beautiful
sheltered harbour and has dozens of magnificent beaches a short drive from
town.
Just outside the city is the photogenic Whangarei Falls and for the
adventurous there are the Abbey Caves to explore. Scuba divers will enjoy
the Poor Knights Islands and for anglers you can join a charter and discover
New Zealand’s game fishing mecca.
The modern city of Whangarei has a long
Maori history and the area still retains a strong Maori flavour.
Whangarei
was joined to Auckland by sealed road only in 1925 and before that was
linked mainly by sea which still flavours the city’s character. The city’s
Northland Port
Corporation makes an important contribution to the city as does the
Marsden Point Refinery, New Zealand’s sole oil refinery. The city attracts
many students to the
Northland Polytechnic and there is a growing fishing and timber industry
in the area.
