The star attraction of the caves are the tens of thousands of sparkling
glow
worms that shine like stars on the roof of the caves. The mosquito sized
glow worms shine to attract other insects who enter the caves via the
stream, which they then eat. Particularly hungry glow worms shine even
brighter!
The Waitomo Caves area has a number of limestone caves and each one has
amazing stalactites hanging from the roof and other amazing sights to view.
Guided tours through the caves include a gentle boat cruise and for the
adventurous there is black water rafting, abseiling and above ground
adventure activities too.
The region has plenty of other attraction to see and activities to enjoy.
The Waitomo Caves are most popularly visited as part of a day trip but for
those interested in a longer stay there is plenty of accommodation at nearby
Te Kuiti and Otorohanga and an abundance of sights and activities to fill
your day. A trip to the caves is a must and promises to be a highlight of
your North Island experience.
