Tauranga - Cities, Towns and Localities |
|
Tauranga with 99,000 residents is the largest city in the Bay of Plenty and
the ideal base for exploring the coast with the towns of Kati Kati,
Whakatane, Te Puke and
Rotorua all within an hours drive. It is
the fastest growing city in New Zealand, its population quadrupling in the last
30 years. Retirees seeking their place in the sun have flocked to the city in
droves and the economy of the region thrives with a solid foundation in
agriculture and forestry. The city and surrounding countryside is filled with
open gardens, historic houses, fruit orchards and is home to Gate Pa and the
Monmouth Redoubt, both important sites in the 1860's Land War between the Maori
and European settlers.
Mt Maunganui is a 10 minute drive
via the bridge across the harbour. Half an hour north of Tauranga is Kati Kati
with the 10 acre
Kati Kati Bird Gardens where you can walk around feeding ducks,
chicken, geese, peacocks and swans. A visit to the Gardens are a must in late
spring when all the chicks run after you calling for food!

The
Port of Tauranga

countrys kiwifruit industry. The Strand runs alongside the harbour and is
filled with reasonably priced cafes boasting high quality cuisine and local New
Zealand wines. All offer covered sidewalk dining which you can enjoy late into
the night. Half an hour west of Tauranga is Te Puke with a large
Vintage Auto Barn containing 70 historic cars while next door is
Kiwifruit Country the
worlds only kiwifruit theme park. Heading west another half hour brings you to
Whakatane where you can enjoy a cruise
to the eerie active volcano at White Island.
Tauranga has an impressive range of
independent hotels and motels as well as backpacker lodges. By booking early you
might find you can save, checking prices now is a good idea. Taurangas
centrally located airport is serviced exclusively by
Air New Zealand while all
major coach companies include Tauranga in their network. However the Bay of
Plenty is best enjoyed with your own vehicle. Check out our listing of
Tauranga
accommodation. For additional attractions, tours and other information, drop
