All around the lake there is
an abundance of geothermal activity manifesting itself in bubbling hot
springs, two active volcanoes at Mt Ngarahoe and Mt Tongarero, and also the
amazing
Wairakei Geothermal region where the hot steam is harnessed to produce
electricity.
The Taupo region has special cultural significance for Moari and the area
abounds in interesting legends and culturally significant sites. Don’t be
scared by the legend of the
Taniwha that lurks in the depths of the lake; New Zealand’s very own
Loch Ness monster, but have your camera ready just in case you get a
glimpse!
Lake
Taupo’s other watery attraction is its abundant trout and salmon which at
sunset can often be seen leaping for sandflies. Anglers can enjoy boat
cruises or some of the many rivers that flow into the lake that all abound
with the tasty fish. By New Zealand law trout can not be sold in shops so if
you want to taste the delicacy you have to catch it yourself. Finer
restaurants cater to diners bringing their own fish for the chef to serve
up!
From five star resorts like
Huka Lodge through
to one star backpacker dorms and camping grounds, Taupo has accommodation to
suit every budget and level of sophistication. The choice of activities also
covers every taste from Moari cultural experiences, skydiving, bungy
jumping, jetboating, fishing, to tours of the geothermal field and
Prawn Farm.
Taupo truly is one of the best year round tourist spots in New Zealand.
The balmy summer climate allows bathing in the fresh water lake, while
winter makes Taupo a great place to venture daily to the ski fields not far
from the southern edge of the lake with nightly soakings in the geothermal
hot springs dotting the area.
Conveniently located half way between Auckland and Wellington, with
convenient air links, and on all coach routes, the number and variety of
attractions can make Taupo a holiday destination in its own right. But to
realistically enjoy a broad sample of the attractions on the holiday menu,
you are best to allow at least two days stay in town.
