New Plymouth - Cities, Towns and Localities
New Plymouth with a population of 50,000 is located on the west coast of the North Island and dominated by the dramatic heights of Fuji-like Mt Taranaki in the Egmont National Park. The dormant volcano, also known as Mt Egmont, is responsible for the rich and fertile soils which now forms one of New Zealand’s main agricultural regions; specialising in dairying. Long sunshine hours, temperate climate and regular rainfall provide ideal conditions for gardeners and during the annual Taranaki Rhododendron and Garden Festival the city bursts into a spectacular riot of colour.

The black iron sandy beaches of Taranaki are relentlessly pounded by the Tasman Sea and are a mecca for surfers. Off the rugged coast is New Zealand’s sole gas field and onshore there are small amounts of oil. Taranaki is also home to an ethanol plant converting milk product waste into alcohol for vehicle use.

New Plymouth is dominated by the towering 2,518 metre height of Mt Taranaki, whose mystical appearance changes with the seasons. In winter the peak glistens with snow cover while in summer the slopes show green vegetation. With easy signposted walkways the volcano is the most climbed peak in the country offering spectacular vistas and its proximity to the city makes the summit an enjoyable picnic destination.

New Plymouth may be off the beaten tourist track, but offers reasonably priced accommodation with a developing café culture, numerous interesting attractions from museums, galleries to gardens and wonderful opportunities to explore nature from the peaks of an extinct volcano.
