Hamilton - Cities, Towns and Localities
Located on the countries longest and most important river the Waikato, surrounded by lush green pastures Hamilton city has grown rapidly from 1877 when Europeans first settled the area. Hamilton’s rapid population growth (20,000 in 1945) has seen the city transform from an agricultural service town to New Zealand’s fourth largest city with 120,000 inhabitants.

Ballooning Hamilton

The city is home to Waikato University and Waikato Polytechnic two of the countries main educational institutions. Hamilton lies at the heart of the countries diary industry and the region produces a sizeable amount of the countries exports. The city also boasts several scientific and research centres and its central location positions it well as a transport hub.

Hamilton’s appeal include a variety of museums and galleries, beautiful gardens that thrive in the temperate climate, ballooning, a boat cruise, casino and several theatres and fun parks. Hamilton is off the beaten tourist trail but is a good place to experience a real slice of New Zealand, its CBD abuzz with activity.
